Make Another Woman’s Day
In the spirit of Women’s Month and actively supporting all the hard working women out there, I thought I’d highlight some of the women who are doing amazing things in the form of a fashion and design haul.
Marguerite Designs, Watershed Cape Town.
As you may or may not know, Java / African print is trending–though in all honesty my mum has been rocking that material for decades! I guess it just took a while for the younger generation (or just me) to start appreciating the beauty and versatility of this fabric. Anyway, for a few years now I’ve been collecting this beautiful fabric from all over Africa (mostly Zambia and Nigeria), but always struggled to find a good designer who wouldn’t waste my fabric or charge me an arm and a leg for their services. Long story short: I managed to find a sweet lady called Marguerite, who for a few years now has never disappointed me.
The first item she made for me was this beautiful maxi skirt that I wore to a wedding last year. I was so impressed that I took a long shot and asked her to sew a Tweed waterfall jacket for me–which came out really nice! Marguerite also does flawless alterations 🙂 so remember her next time you need an African outfit or any designer outfit for that matter!
The African Women’s Craft Market, Long Street Cape Town.
I’ve picked up some unique items at this Market over the years and the nice thing is, you can always negotiate the price with these friendly ladies. If you’re into hand-made jewellery, this is your gold mine! The creativity levels of these women are incredible; from bracelets made out of pebbles to dried tree pod earrings–you’ll find any and every accessory that you can image here. Some of the items in the picture include: a beaded clutch purse, beaded bracelet, a thick pebble stone bracelet and some showstopping dried tree pod earrings!
ONEOFEACH, South Africa / Online
Pauline and Tamburai Chirume are the mother-daughter duo behind this amazing business. (Girl power yay!) ONEOFEACH offers a luxury range of designer hand bags made from unique combinations of Leather or Suede and Java/ African Print fabric. I have to say that these bags are the best thing I’ve discovered in very long time; plus the coolest part is they literally make only one of each design! How cool is that! I purchased the tan bag in the picture from their stall at the Watershed and the other two I bought at their last Studio Sale. You can find the ONEOFEACH design online or at most of the popular market places near you!
I hope you guys liked my Women’s Month haul! Let’s keep supporting women in business not only during Women’s Month but throughout the year.
